This dissertation examines the liability of the shipowner and charterer as well as of the carrier
and the port’s systems where the dangerous cargo is loaded and unloaded. To this end a
detailed analysis regarding the definition and the categories of dangerous cargoes is pursued
while there is reference on the mandatory loading, packing, marking, labelling, stowage and
operational procedures and requirements to ensure that the safety of the crew is maintained
and the pollution of the sea will be prevented in case of an accident. We will emphasize on
the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG) which is the main legislative tool
setting the rules for the transport of dangerous goods. The legislation issued by the Hellenic
Republic, European Union and International Organisations such as IMO will also be
examined. Data used have been collected by maritime law literature and publications of IMO
and European Union.
