The growth of the world economy is primarily based on international trade, with the
assistance of international transport. One of the safest and most effective ways of transporting
large volumes of cargo is shipping by sea.
In this context, Greek-owned seagoing shipping plays a leading role in global maritime
transport, significantly affecting the Greek economy, strengthening its most important
macroeconomic figures.
On the other hand, the activity of Greek-navy shipping also affects the environment
considerably, as merchant vessels expel harmful substances that burden it. For this reason, a
legislative framework, both at international and at European level, has been set up to protect the
environment.
The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of Greek-owned merchant shipping on
both the Greek economy and the environment in order to promote its role in strengthening the
Greek economy as well as protecting the environment, but also to identify its weaknesses and
the scope for its improvement.
