This thesis is an attempt to analyze the bill of lading as the contract of carriage of goods both
according to Greek and to British legislation. For the best examination of the legal and real
data a comparison is made between two decisions, one from a Greek and one from a British
court. The conclusion is impressive, if we take under consideration that while the starting point
of the bill of lading both in Greece and in Great Britain is the same (Hague – Visby rules,
which targeted in unifying the rules for the bill of lading), the differences are significant in
terms of the probative force of the bill of lading as the contract of carriage. The method used
on this Thesis begins with a theoretical analysis of the rules of the bill of lading, the contract
of carriage and, finally, the comparison of the two decisions from a Greek and a British court.
The choice of the decision of the British court was made on the basis that it triggered several
different theoretical views and opinions on the subject.
