This research is concerned with the leadership behavior of the managers in an organization, such as a hospital unit. The provision of health services by workers depends to a large extent on their proper management by the head of their department. This is because in each service the boss plays the role of both the manager and the mentor and counselor of the employees, who have to serve the needs and particularities of the patients.
Today, however, the time we have has created an extremely demanding environment for everyone, particularly complex and contradictory. In particular, with regard to the sensitive area of Health, we know that in the years of the economic crisis, this sector has undergone tremendous economic cuts, but we are not in the position to make the corresponding cuts in the health services provided. In particular, at a time when patients mainly resort to public hospitals, there is a great need for high performance by employees and a strong will from those in leadership to achieve excellent results.
All this situation in the workplace, as well as in every organization, creates the need and the expectation of people who hold positions of authority in a hospital not only to carry out their organizing and organizational tasks but also to adopt leadership behaviors.
There are several departments in a hospital, most of which employ medical and nursing staff, but there are also administrative departments. Each department is headed by a manager. In the present study, therefore, we asked the employees to judge the leadership of their superior.
Our goal is to study whether and how leadership plays a role in delivering results and, ultimately, in the development of the Organization.
The present study has been done to study the behavior of managers in relation to employees, from the employees’ point of view. A questionnaire was designed to collect data for supervisors and their performance, based on the opinions of their superiors. We should note at this point that 360 degree surveys like this are not routine, because for an organizational structure like a hospital it is difficult to manage information. There is no such data in the Greek bibliography, especially about the issue of leadership for which the Greek bibliography is poor.
The questionnaire was built on the Model of Nine Dimensions of Leadership of the National Health System of the United Kingdom (NHS) to help Health workers become better leaders. According to the model, whether an employee works directly with patients and users of the Services, or not, he will find that how he does and how he behaves affects the experiences of patients and users of the Agency Services, the quality of the care provided but also the reputation of the Hospital itself.
The structure of this model also determined the structure of the questionnaire. Therefore, the questionnaire consists of the questions concerning the demographics concerning the respondents and nine categories of questions, each of which corresponds to one dimension of leadership behavior.
The hospital chosen for the research is the General Hospital of Karditsa, which is also the largest in the prefecture of Karditsa. 116 questionnaires were collected from nurses, doctors and administrative staff.
The first part of this paper presents the theoretical part, which deals with leadership, the characteristics of leadership behaviors, the differences between manager and leader and the leader’s behavior. There is also a detailed presentation of the “Model of the nine Dimensions of the Leadership” which inspired the questionnaire. This model presents health leaders as expected and is in the National Health System of Britain, which is exemplary at European and global level.
In the second part of the survey, the primary data collected by the General Hospital of Karditsa, which are analyzed and commented, are presented. At the end of this section, a brief description of the results as well as suggestions and thoughts for further research are made.
