Biostatistics is the branch of statistics that deals with the application of statistical
methods in clinical problems. This science is a cornerstone in the evolution of medical
practice, since the use of scientific methodology allowed the collection of medical data, their
analysis and the interpretation of the corresponding results.
Epilepsy is a group of different disorders, which have as their common point, repeated
exacerbations with sudden, excessive and abnormal discharge of brain neurons. Epileptic
seizures can cause convulsions (if the motor cortex participates) or visual, auditory or
olfactory hallucinations (if the parietal or occipital cortex is involved).
The purpose of this study is to investigate genetic and pharmaceutical factors, which are
associated with epilepsy and may affect the occurrence of side effects in patients. There are
also presented demographic and clinical characteristics of patients, which are investigated
for their possible relationship to the disease.
The statistical methods which have been used to analyze the data and to draw
conclusions , was descriptive analysis (one-dimensional and two-dimensional), normality
tests, tests of independence, non parametric hypothesis tests, the principal components
analysis, the factor analysis and logistic regression. The sample was granted by the Pharmacy
Department of the University of Athens.
