This working paper examines the procedures followed during the three so far recapitalizations of Greek banks and the reform through reduce of the Greek banking system. To fulfill this objective, in the first part of the work, the basic concepts of banking are analyzed to the reader so that he is able to monitor the analysis of banks' balance sheet data that follows. The ultimate objective of this first part is to lay the foundations for reflection on the substantive success or failure of recapitalization. The second part is an analysis of the financial crisis and the progress of Greece before and during the crisis. The debt crisis in Greece, as noted, is closely connected with the banking crisis in the country: the political decisions concerning the signing of agreements for financing the Greek debt include terms for the Greek banks and influence them directly. In the third and last part, the terms and conditions of the three so far recapitalizations of Greek banks are analyzed in detail. The elements of the balance sheet are used to criticize the practice of mergers and acquisitions and examine the prospect of sustainability addressed in the future and the return to profitability through the achievement of the basic functioning of the real economy financing.
