Shipping is the world's most developed economic sector and is characterized by strong
competition and complexity, mainly due to the nature of shipping business. The
international nature of shipping has contributed to the adoption of rules and conventions
by international organizations to improve its operation.
The first attempt of an international maritime security regulation was in 1914 with the adoption of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) with an intention to improve the safety of ships. The SOLAS 74 International Convention covers many aspects of ship security including its equipment, fire safety measures, cargo transportation and maritime safety.
The International Code of Safety Management (ISM Code) has been established to limit the occurrence of human error, creating an organizational culture for maritime-oriented safety. The basic idea of the ISM Code is that companies must be in a continuous process of continuous improvement of security while at the same time committing top management to the implementation of this culture.
In the present project, we will deal with the issue of maritime safety as well as with the implementation of the above rules and conventions. An important role in this process is the human factor. All the costs and benefits of the practical application and mechanisms applied to the shipowner and the shipping company for safe navigation in the seas and the simultaneous protection of the marine environment will be analyzed.
