This Diploma thesis investigates the effect of the presence of foreign banks to the
stability of the domestic banking system. The aim is to clarify the role of foreign banks
in the banking system and to assess the extent to which they affect it. Initially, we
study the bibliography about foreign banks and their behavior, the stability of banking
system and the combination of the above. Then, by developing the necessary
methodology and the appropriate statistical tools, we examine through a series of tests
the relationship between the presence of foreign banks and the banking system risk,
as well as their influence on the banking market concentration and the net interest
margin of banks. Finally, we analyze the results of the above tests and present the
conclusions.
