This diploma thesis is part of the graduate program in Finance & Banking Management of University of Piraeus. The subject of this thesis is the banking sector and especially how non-performing loans are affecting the possibility of bankruptcy of European banks.
In the first part, a brief insight of the importance of the financial system is presented alongside with the major threats that it is facing. After this, an introduction in banking and the basic banking operations are mentioned in addition with the banking risks.
The second chapter is dealing with the legal background that set the rules that ascertain the efficient operation of the financial and banking system. In the third chapter of this dissertation, the term of non-performing loans is presented, emphasizing their accumulation factors and their importance.
The results of this empirical analysis are presented and analyzed on chapter number four. The data were collected from the financial data base “Datastream” (Thomson Reuters) that is consisted of active banks of 20 countries of the European Union for the period of 2000 until 2016.
The conclusion of this result is that the default of an average European bank is affected by non-performing loans and its provisions. Conclusions and potential action steps are presented in detail in the fifth chapter.
