Sustainability is the collection of economic, social and environmental data used by companies and governments to minimize their environmental impact on future generations. Several attempts were made to quantify the data and assign them to a single index.
In the present thesis, an investigation was made regarding the environmental index EPI 2008, which is published by the Yale University and the Center for International Earth Science information network of Columbia University, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum. This indicator was based on pilot index, EPI 2006.
According to the EPI 2008 official study case, the index was calculated in four steps. The 25 Indicators of each country were converted into 10 Subcategories by parametric methods. These Subcategories were converted into 6 Policy Categories and then in two Objectives. Thus, EPI 2008 extracted from a linear relationship of 2 Objectives.
In the present study both the reproduction of each level with the predecessor and reproduction of EPI in every possible data’s combination were investigated. The effort to predict every level from the previous was made via three different calculation modes: use all data, to create and check polynomial (use-all), cross validation technique, leave one out (k = 1) and cross-validation technique, 10-fold (k = 10).
The objective of this thesis is to verify the methodology of official reporting of EPI 2008 and to determine whether it could calculate EPI in a new country, if data is available.
