The purpose of this research is to study the producing of films and television series as a tool of tourism and economic development and the case of Greece as a potential filming location.
The aim of this study was to explore how the production, the screening and promotion of a film can contribute to the tourism and economic growth of the region where the filming took place, what are the procedures to motivate foreign producing teams to select a country and which factors are crucial to choosing a location as the filming location for their upcoming movie, what actions should the competent bodies take, which are the economic benefits for the producers , and the direct and indirect impact on the filming location, and therefore film induced tourism Moreover, through the presentation of various foreign movies that the shooting took place in Greece and abroad, and a selection of case studies of successful productions, an attempt is made to assess whether a foreign film production in Greece can have beneficial effects on its economy and its tourism.
As a result, it is concluded that films and their production, can play an essential role in the economic and tourism growth of a location, but the excellent cooperation between all relevant actors is vital, as the possibility of financial incentives and other types of facilitations to lure the producers, so the specific location can exploit the foreign productions in the best possible way.
Certainly, even though there are some challenges, Greece has the potential to develop in the movie production industry and become an important filming location, while strengthening its position as a tourist destination.
