There is a growing need in the health sector not only for expanding of services coverage, but also for quality optimization while achieving a cost reduction. To this regard, the assistance of modern technologies is required. The contribution of IT in the health sector has created an interdisciplinary field that has already become an integral part of all phases of the healthcare. The IT organization of health service providers, which are characterized by complexity, concerns a project on one hand fully complicated with regards to the initial installation and commissioning of information systems in a productive operation, on the other hand constitutes a severe task in relation to the consistency and effort required for continuous improvement and adaptation to daily developments of the health sector. The purpose of present study is the technology of Health Information Systems. Its goal is the general reference to Health Information Systems, the introduction to their environment, the determination of their concept, as well as their implementation. Moreover part of its main goal, is the recording of their development and their specialization in specific objectives which may contribute to the development of preventive policy, in case it will be required. The purpose of the study has dual objectives: It directly refers to the supporting institutional and organizational interventions and reforms for integrating Information Technology in the Health sector. Indirectly, it refers to the upgrading quality of services, the reorganization of internal processes from the implementation of information systems and finally to the achievement of every agency mission, which is to serve the citizen-user of health services. For indicative purposes only, among the individual objectives which form necessary components of the present study, are including: reference of the various categories of Health Information Systems and their usefulness, their connection to Greek real cases, exploration and reporting of integration degree at health service providers in our country, recording of various problems and obstacles for their implementation, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. For carrying out the present study, the method of systematic literature review has been used. The literature review and corresponding research data were focused on the time period from 2000 to 2013, in order for recent developments and trends in the field of health information systems to be recorded and on the same time to generate a comparison with similar systems. In parallel, where deemed necessary, data have been reported covering a wider time period, in order to get the opportunity of timeless presentation and subject evaluation. The conclusions drawn from this project are subdivided, as to the current situation of the IT health market, to the health policies on the use of Information Systems at national and international level and finally to the subject of integrated information health network systems at a central and regional health level. However, all of them contribute to the prevailing view that the current economic conditions as well as the "Memorandum" terms and requirements, make urgent the necessity of implementing an effective and sustainable integrated information system that will address the overall health units and will allow for better management of resources, a more efficient computerization, covering adequately the citizen needs by ensuring qualitative and integrated services.
