Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to record, study and investigate the situation on business financing by the Greek banking system, following the financial crisis that started in 2007 and is still ongoing in our country. The recent financial crisis has triggered a large-scale banking merging, resulting in only four credit institutions, now called "systemic banks". The credit institutions that now dominate the domestic banking system are: Piraeus Bank, Alpha Bank, EFG Eurobank and National Bank of Greece (NBG).
The subject of this study is the presentation of the Greek banking system, as it has been shaped by reforms and their reconstruction, as well as the detailed presentation of the criteria that apply to business financing.
The first chapter of the study examines the global financial crisis of 2007, how it started, its causes, and how it was transmitted to Eurozone. The financial crisis in Greece as well as to the evolution of debt and other financial data is then analyzed.
The second chapter includes the analysis of the Greek banking system and how it addressed the financial crisis that broke out in September 2008. The impact of the financial crisis on the Greek banking system, as well as the financing resources of Greek credit institutions before and after crisis outbreak is studied. An important part of this second chapter is the analysis of the ways in which the Greek banking system was faced with the financial crisis, but also the efforts made by the Greek banks to smooth their exit from the difficult position found, preserving their assets and trying to limit as much as possible their precarities.
In the third chapter of this thesis there is a special reference to the credit policy principles and the criteria for assessing the financing of business loans as formulated by the four systemic banks, which are now the pillar of support for the Greek economy. There is a separate reference to each credit rating method of business, as well as to the three largest rating agencies that are Moody's, S & P and Fitch Rating and their rating methods.
For further studying the banks' rating to business and how the economic crisis affected them, a questionnaire survey was conducted, addressed to executives of the four systemic banks. The results of the survey are analyzed in Chapter 4.
This work is completed with the fifth chapter, which outlines some conclusions based on the questionnaire and some suggestions for future research.
