The financial crisis, that Greece has been confronting the last few years, is probably the country’s chance to exploit her competitive advantages, among which is her geographical area and her natural resources. The energy section offers important opportunities, that can boost the entrepreneurship and contribute to a new Recovery Plan for the Greek Economy. Foreign investments can contribute to the financial development and eliminate the lack of liquidity. Despite the financial crisis, investors’ interest is vivid. However, there is a long way to walk. Some of the negative factors/hindrances/barriers for the investor are the following: the constantly changing tax rates, the endless bureaucracy, the lack of liquidity, law complexity. Therefore, if new investors are to be attracted and especially in the energy sector, a lot of reforms should be implemented. The aim of this thesis is to analyze foreign investments with particular emphasis on foreign investments in the Greek energy sector. In the first chapter, the meaning of protected investment will be examined and the Greek investment law and the advantages of investments will be reviewed. In the second chapter some techniques for the attraction and the protection of foreign investments, the guarantees that the host country offers as well as the restrictions it that poses will be discussed. In the last chapter, the most important energy investments that are presently being carried out in Greece will be considered.
