Start-up entrepreneurship is linked to social and financial factors, no matter the country of origin. In periods of financial crisis new ideas seem to be getting a hold of fertile ground in order to limit one’s living cost. Start-up companies are characterized by a great degree of innovation, but also high risk. In Greece, start-up companies have gained significant popularity as the financial crisis has established itself and they become even more abundant as the crisis proceeds.
The aim of this study was to define the financial and social characteristics of the Greek start-up companies, as well as their sustainability. The study was conducted using questionnaires that were created for this purpose. Through our study, it seems that factors that affect both positively and negatively the Greek start-ups create a complicated set of correlations. The start-up types that are favored belong to the categories of new technologies or traditional products. Companies running from the rural areas of the country are more likely to receive extensive funding, rather than being located in the two largest Greek cities. Start-up founders are mostly Msc and PhD holders, making them a highly educated portion of the market and they mostly prefer to start a high degree innovation company. They usually prefer to include specialists of the field they are working on, in order to handle their high degree of innovation in a better way, especially since for most the target market is the world market itself. In case these companies receive full funding, companies with the highest start-up cost are the ones favored, especially if located in the rural areas or linked to agriculture.
Taking everything into account, Greek start-ups face the same financial obstacles as the rest Greek companies, especially during the first years of their life cycle. Companies that have the ability to overcome the three-year limit of sustainability are characterized by a high degree of innovation and effectiveness. These companies need to hold a large amount of equity to cover for their needs. This is the actual profile of a Greek start-up company and these are the above factors are the ones that need to be consider by future entrepreneurs that intend to form a start-up company in Greece.
