Purpose of this project was to study the concession of the Piraeus Container Terminal in comparison to the concession models as applied in the largest container handling ports in Europe. At first, the concept of the concessions is defined as well as the reasons for Port Authorities to allow private sector involvement in the provision of services and inversely the grounds on which the private sector sought its involvement to these services are presented. In view of the above, the major port reforms that took place in Europe are analyzed together with the different models of private sector involvement that resulted from them. The objective is the evaluation of these models and their comparison to the case of Piraeus’ Container Terminal.
