Management and job satisfaction in public sector. A study for the satisfaction of employees of IKA-ETAM during the period of Greek economic recession

Public administration in a modern democracy should be an appropriate tool for the implementation of the policies adopted by the democratically coordinated state. It must be characterized by efficiency, try to improve the living standards of citizens, to enhance their quality of life and ensure the individual rights, to help create wider economic development and to promote relations and cooperation in the country with other countries and international organizations. This paper is an attempt to review public management - mainly Greek - and the impact of the economic downturn in all sectors. We analyze the characteristics of public administration and modern methods of management in the public sector, as recorded in the literature and we present the Greek public sector, and the characteristics of the job satisfaction of public officials. In the context of this study, a sample of 78 employees of IKA-ETAM used to investigate the trends of professional satisfaction and compared with the corresponding prior economic downturns. According to them, the job satisfaction of employees of IKA-ETAM demonstrated moderate in both periods, however, the factors that make It up differ. Through the analysis conducted, the results of the actions imposed by the economic recession are highlighted as well as their impact on human resources ln the publlc sector.
