This paper examines various aspects of the phenomenon of modern piracy, an international problem that occurs mainly in the Gulf of Aden. This multifaceted problem whose causes are within the political, economic and social conditions prevailing in the region, and the consequences effect the whole international shipping. This paper focuses on different parameters, such as the causes and background of the problem addressed, the impact of the international shipping and overall its extensions, as well as the appropriate way to deal with it effectively, through the coordination and cooperation of maritime forces, with the proper application of methods such as "Best Management Practices". Further, given the legal framework- both Greek and international level- which regulates the issue of piracy. The data on which have been drawn from multiple sources, including maritime law books, reports, international maritime organizations and shipping companies.
