In this present thesis we will analyze the voluntary environmental management in the maritime sector in the general frames of the corporate social responsibility, which, nowadays, must be applied to all enterprises and of course to the shipping/port sector. It is now given that the functional actions of the companies cause significant environmental and social impacts. An organization, in order to be financially viable, has to adopt integrated environmental and social actions, which aim at minimizing the negative consequences. However the maritime industry has some particularities-which will be analyzed here in below-that make difficult the application of the corporate social responsibility. Furthermore, in this present thesis we will analyze the rules and principles that have been set by the international maritime institutions, which rules and principles are combined with the voluntary environmental management programs that are available for application to the business sector and to the shipping/port enterprises. Moreover, a reference will be made to the shipping accidents and their cost (fines-compensations-depollution) will be compared with the cost of adopting the security and environment regulations.
