The European Union Directive 2000/59/EC of 27 November 2000 aims to reduce the discharges of waste into the sea to enhance the protection of the marine environment. In this dissertation, follows the presentation of the directive. Also, the dissertation explains how through the amendment of some articles the directive is incorporated into Greek law and highlights the differences in implementation between Greece and other European countries. The dissertation is referred to the parties and the links that should be developed between them for the proper implementation of the directive. According to legislation, waste and cargo residues reception is carried out successfully when the port facilities establish a waste management plan which can serve the needs of every ship those docks. Great emphasis is given on the recording and the analysis of such projects from various ports in Greece. For the better evaluation of the directive the dissertation includes the categorization of the Greek ports, depending on their size and the number of the ships that they serve. Then, with the help of several data that have been collected from port authorities and municipal port funds, and port data about the pollution of the Greek seas the project concludes to results that allow us to observe the rate of development and implementation of the project in each category, the need of implementation from every category and ultimately watch the reduction of the marine pollution due to the implementation of European legislation. From all the above we are led to conclusions that can help us to correct not only the various points of directive itself but mainly in the way that it applies to Greece and the E.U..
