The subject of the present Msc Dissertation is the study of the optimal arrangement problem for the components of a structure, so that its reliability attains its highest possible value. Special attention is drawn to the problem of identifying optimal arrangements when the ordering of the component reliabilities is known while the actual values of them remain unknown. Addressing this problem is called invariant optimal design of the system. In addition we present methods that can secure higher system reliability (not necessarily the maximum one) when no invariant design exists and the actual values of the component reliabilities are known. Addressing this problem is called variant optimal design of the system.
