Global shipping is a dynamic industry whose prosperity greatly affects the national economy of each individual country. In addition, it has the capacity to stimulate the country's outward orientation through participation in international trade, to create new jobs, to improve its productivity and to contribute positively to GDP. However, the upward trend in the shipping industry has been hampered by the global economic crisis and the prolonged recession period experienced by most countries. For Greece, the shipping industry is the main pillar of its development and has a long track record and quite competitive advantages. One of the core activities of the shipping industry is participation in international trade and hence freight transport. The structure of shipping in the shipping industry has changed over the last few years, while the supply chain is operating. The primary responsibility of the latter is to move goods safely, while maintaining the quality of transport and focusing on meeting customer requirements. In the context of writing this paper a case study was carried out at the Port of Piraeus where the operation of the supply chain division and its structure was identified. Finally, in a survey conducted in its operation, some data on the progress of freight traffic in the last time, following the onset of the economic crisis, were identified.
