Use of digital media for guitar fretboard knowledge enhancement: the educational system “Fretfull”
Electric guitar teaching, is a subject of many researches both among musicologists and educators, as well as in music technology researchers. In Greece, the teaching of electric guitar (as well as of instruments that do not belong to the category of the so-called classical instruments) does not yet have a recognized and consequently a well-established curriculum. At the same time, a large number of students (if not the majority) have first gone through a self-teaching state, ignoring elements necessary for their musical evolution. This master thesis, deals with the design and implementation of the "FretFull" educational system. , which aims to assist the electric guitar teacher and student in one of the greatest challenges in the process of teaching and learning the instrument: learning the guitar fret board. The main goals to achieve, so we can have the best result from this method, are: • Exercises in real-world conditions (study of musical works), • Designing this method, based on knowledge that students already have (taking into account the level of students) • Providing motivation to students. The importance of this research is emphasized by the experimental test of the system, by advanced electric guitar students to demonstrate that their level of technical training is not consistent with the level of their fretboard knowledge, which is something that holds them back, in their improvisational efforts, in the demanding world of jazz music.
