In this study, educational virtual reality applications have been investigated. Educational applications are defined as the applications which are designed with a sole purpose to convey knowledge about any subject, whether these are integrated into the formal educational framework or are intended to entertain or help individuals to acquire specific skills. The virtual reality educational applications explored were developed with state-of-the-art tools, according to their implementation year. The most popular tool for deploying virtual applications and virtual environments is a game engine. The purpose of the study is to create a virtual reality application, which will display exhibits in a virtual environment in the form of a virtual gallery, using a game engine. The goal is to demonstrate that virtual reality applications can be a medium for transmitting knowledge, for entertainment and as well as for promoting the personal work of artists. The following study presents an overview of the related scientific work, which analyzes the most important applications related to the dissertation’s aims. Based on the state-of-the-art applications examined, the requirements of the educational application are recorded. Next, the plan is outlined and the implementation of the application is analyzed. Finally, the findings of the implementation process of the application are discussed, as well as future improvements on the application.
