The shipping industry has developed rapidly during the last years, while at the same time it has presented an evolution in the ship technology and affected the crew on board the vessels. The financial crisis of the last decade has forced the shipping companies to consider as an immediate need the reduction of the running costs of the vessels and mainly the crew costs. This critical department is challenged to reduce the costs, derived from the crew salaries. As a result, they are interested in less expensive nationalities, mainly because of their life quality. Consequently, it has to face the adequate manning with cheaper crew coming from developing countries, who however should be capable enough and fully certified so as the management of the vessel will remain safe and secure.
