Strategic integration is a key issue for the freight/transportation companies in Liner Shipping when designing a supply chain. As a business strategy and a supply chain governance strategy, Vertical Integration is directly related with the organisation and management of the supply chain. There are several explanations created and given for Vertical Integration, which are mostly relevant to cost-cutting justifications through all levels of the transportation chain. However, the continuously increasing tendency of carriers to choose Vertical Integration as a business strategy for the integration of the Door-to-Door transportation service reveals data which explain that the tendency is justified by something more than minimising costs and shifting the industry structure. This study intends to examine the reasons for the carriers choosing Vertical Integration as a strategy for establishing freight integration, along with its consequences both in the supply management and the companies implementing Vertical Integration.
